Cold Call — Where Is the Thing?

Usually I use my tarot cards for these cold call readings, but tonight I was playing with astrology and got the urge to cast a horary chart for…someone.

A horary chart (from medieval Latin horarius, ‘hour’) is a divination tool that uses the positions of the planets at the moment a question is asked to show what the prevailing energy currents are like. Did I cast this chart for you?

(Click on the image to see the full chart.)

The Thing is in plain sight, but it’s not where you WANT it to be, is it?

You’re looking entirely in the wrong places. I get the impression that The Thing has to do with self-esteem, social standing, maybe even love–but is it love for others, or just a slightly desperate need to know that others love YOU? If so, temper your approach. *I* know and *you* know that you’re just trying to help, but you’re coming off as hyper-critical, aggressively nit-picky, and a general downer. They’re wondering what happened to that fun-loving side of you, the one who could share the spotlight and make everyone feel great.

Luckily, they know this side of you too, and they’re patient. Relax. You really are just as great as you want to be, and your friends know this. You could do with a little alone-time to ground and center yourself without being influenced by input from the crowd, but don’t sequester yourself for too long. They need you. They want you. You’re fine. This paranoia is unfounded. Give yourself a break and just let them know you love them–they’ll return the feeling. Accept it.

7/19 Cold Reading: BE CAREFUL, BIKERS!

I’m inspired to do a “Cold Call” reading tonight, but I’m bored with tarot cards. I’m going to draw some random goodies from my special mojo bag filled with Somniscript chips and other dream symbols that I’ve picked up along the way.

That bicycle could be a metaphor: freedom and efficiency comes with a degree of vulnerability. I’m getting a strong feeling, though, that this is literal. I have a few friends who ride. I want you all to be very careful this week.

The symbol on the right represents the Law of Conservation of Energy. Sounds nice and “green,” doesn’t it? But it really refers to the tendency of the Universe to balance itself out, like water seeking its own level. Energy can’t be created or destroyed, but it does change form, all the time.

The middle symbol isn’t Somniscript, but the sigil of the planet Uranus: he rules chaos and transformation. Sometimes this works in our favor. Other times it can be pretty painful.

The symbol on the left is the doorway to new worlds. And in this case, I sense that this “new world” is going to require leaving the old one behind.

Seriously, cyclist friends, pay attention and watch your ass. Cars and buses ARE BIGGER THAN YOU and they can’t always see you zipping around. The life force is a form of energy. Please don’t let yours change form just yet.

“Somniscript” what…?

Earth-centric astrology has always seemed really confining to me. What about other-dimensional beings? What about someone born on another planet? What about everyone who just doesn’t feel that Earthling groove? These symbols came to me in a dream trance during the wide-open doorway of the New Moon on the darkest night of 2012 (when the world may or may not have been ending, remember that? Good times!). Whatever your center may be, it’s all about the cycles around you.

Stay tuned for more about Somniscript and how these dream symbols are used in charts and readings! I’ll have some free samples coming up later this week! (Or PM me for more info and a special pre-official-offer reading discount.)

Gritty Tarot Re-boot

This is, without a doubt, the most intensive Photoshop project I’ve ever done. I have at least 20 hours into these two images. Prints will be available as soon as I have the pricing down.

I did all the Photoshopping myself, but I owe many thanks to Corvin of Mixed Debris for the raw photos, and to Mary St. Sin and Sir Mark Bruback for standing still longer than Adam and Eve probably ever did.

Of course these pieces are based on Pamela Coleman Smith’s original designs for the Rider-Waite tarot. The card borders are from scanned images of my 1971 deck.

By the Gods, this was fun. I think I’ll do an entire deck. At this rate, it’ll be ready for pre-orders around 2025. Anyone want to sit for photos?

The Story So Far…

Hey there! Been busy. Websites to build. The Internet is not nearly big enough yet. Today seemed like a good time for a cold reading, though…

I think this one’s kind of for everyone right now. When I was shuffling the cards, I got a very strong sense that these three little cards apply to so many people that it might just as well be a reading for everyone in the world in general.

Change is in the air. It’s undenyable. It’s unavoidable. Yet so many people are resisting it that it’s starting to become a THING. This transformation will not be blocked forever, because it WILL happen. The dam is about to burst. Let’s try to channel this tsunami of energy into something that will benefit everyone.

You know what? Well-placed chaos is okay. Chaos leads to opportunities that lead to transformation that leads to growth. Get to know that voice deep within you — the one that’s a little (or a lot) different from what you’ve been taught. It’s really okay to step into something new. Quit trying to fight and guard and resist, and start reaching out to help.

This is the beginning of a whole new phase of clear thinking. We can all still draw lines in the sand; but do take a moment to step back and see what kind of pattern all these lines are making. Consider how your lines can be a contribution, rather than a barricade, to the beautiful new shape that’s being drawn.

The world is changing, and that’s okay.

I’m feeling sassy and weird tonight (and how is that different than any other night? Never mind.) I’m going to use Morgan’s Tarot and the Somniscript for this cold reading.

Well, well, well. Aren’t you special? Yes, in fact, you are. WHY ARE YOU STILL LISTENING TO OTHER PEOPLE’S RULES? This reading speaks to those who are my own kindred spirits. I have a feeling it might even be for one of my own other-dimensional friends. (I don’t have Spirit Guides. I have a Peanut Gallery.)

That doesn’t mean that it isn’t for you, too.

Center yourself wherever you’re meant to be. Quit asking permission. Don’t look for external validation to make sure you’re doing it right. “Right” is whatever you call it. Next step: bring it to the real world and live it. No, you don’t need emotional validation. You need intellectual action to balance out all those feelings and dreams and you need to make this real on your own terms.

Will you get crap for it? Yep. Why do you care? Who are you trying to please? Do any of those people really exist, or are they just mouthpieces for a whiny, insecure Overmind? Your reality is just as real as anyone else’s. Give it a chance to settle in, and tend it with love and care. It will take root and grow.

You can change the world, even if it’s just your own perspective of the world. Why would you worry about anyone else’s? This is what you can control. This is yours. Own it.

Quit Feckin’ About

cr-20150624For tonight’s Cold Reading, I pulled a couple of cards from my old faithful Rider-Waite deck. The first thing to show up is the Nine of Cups — someone’s wish is about to come true!

This card means that everything is all set to go your way. As long as you’re not asking for anything ridiculously out of the bounds of possibility, IT WILL HAPPEN. The whole Universe is on your side. Don’t ruin this.

But what’s this? The Ace of Swords, reversed. Do you even know what you want? I bet you do. You’ve been given the keys — now you just have to quit worrying about what everyone ELSE wants, and lock in your choice.

Finally, Judgement reversed suggests a holding pattern: one that you’ve created, due to your own insecurities, uncertainties, and lack of direction. You’re your own worst block at this point. Quit waiting for the Universe to tell you what to do. The Universe is waiting for you to tell IT what to do.

It’s kind of like that old non-argument: “Where do you want to go to eat?” “I don’t know, wherever.” “You pick.” “No, YOU pick.”

SOMEBODY PLEASE JUST PICK before we start eating each other.

Make. A. Decision. Then go with it. It will work out!

Rise and Sign

You know your Sun sign. (Right?) Everyone fits neatly into one of 12 pigeon-holes which define your entire personality and make it easy for newspapers to print perfectly accurate 3-line horoscopes that you can rely on to tell you exactly what your day will be like…

rising-sign…Or not.

Because you’re so much more than your Sun sign. The Sun is important, sure: its position in your chart is a like a huge lens that collects all the other planets’ energy and focuses it in one place. It’s your conscious mind, your general outlook, the outline that you get to color in. But there are a lot of subtleties involved. 12 simple categories do not define everyone in the world. Your chart is as unique as a fingerprint.

So, do you know your Rising Sign? Also called the “Ascendant,” this is the zodiac constellation which was coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. This sign rules the 1st House, which is the segment of the chart that defines the “Self.” It’s like a filter between you and the outside world: it shapes your perspectives and the personality you project.

The Ascendant is just as important as the Sun sign when it comes to defining your personality, and when a powerful planet is transiting through this sign, your entire life is affected.

For example: I’m a Sagittarius. (Actually I’m an Ophiucus, but that’s a whole ‘nother post.) Sagittarius is all about adventure and travel and spiritual philosophy and new experiences. Wheeeeeeee!

However, I’ve got Virgo rising. This means that I want to be a pirate and an astronaut and a rock star and a messiah, but first I have to finish organizing my books according to the new and improved Dewey Decimal System that I invented.

Ooh! An adventure! I must create a new database to catalog each photo and journal entry so that I may easily cross-reference them with previous escapades.

And that’s just the 1st House. There are 12 Houses in a chart, defining everything from family to romance to money to careers to karma. Every sign influences every chart in one way or another, along with the planets and a peanut gallery of asteroids, Nodes, aspects, and ever-changing daily transits.

So when you say “I’m a (insert sign here), but I don’t FEEEEEL like a (insert sign here), and my free horoscopes are never right,” that doesn’t mean astrology is bunk.* It means that you should take a look at your whole chart in order to see where all that other energy is coming from.
*That, too, is a post for another time.

Cold Reading: You’re going to be ok, just DO SOMETHING

Ohhhhhh let’s do a 4am Cold Reading. I’m tired of Tarot, though. Tonight I’m going to draw from my own divination tools: the Somniscript glyphs.

cr-20150613Wow. Now, this is why I love Somniscript. We start out with the entire Multiverse itself, and I’ve covered it with a Door. Whoever you are, reality is yours to command. You just need to grow a pair and take the responsibility: step through the door. This means leaving some things behind. It means entering the unknown — but it’s not really “unknown,” is it? It’s just “unexperienced…YET.” In an infinite multiverse, anything is possible.

I also drew a token from my Mystical Bag of Mojo Dreamy Things. Here we have a Trefoil. The three-leaved clover is a protective herb (not quite as lucky as its four-leaved sibling, but still a positive symbol). Numerologically, this also bears the powerful ACTION of the number 3. So, do you have what it takes to break out of the old boring familiar patterns and carry on under your own power? Start building.

What? It’s not possible? Who says? Screw them. If you can imagine it, then it already exists on some plane of reality. Bring it here and let’s see it. I dare ya.

Mercury Needs a Time-Out

Find something to hide under for the next couple of weeks. (A nice blanket fort should do the trick.) Mercury Retrograde is upon us.

mercury-trollThis happens three or four times a year, when the Earth overtakes planet Mercury, making Mercury appear to go backwards in the sky. (The other planets have retrograde periods too, though not as often as Mercury’s.) This one started on May 19 and will go through June 11. It’s a doozie this time too, as Mercury just happens to be in Gemini, the sign that it rules.

Mercury and Gemini deal with communication, the rational side of social interaction (as opposed to emotional), education, and movement. So, when Mercury goes rogue, you can bet there will be mix-ups. Arguments and misunderstandings abound. Information gets lost. Travel plans go awry. Electronics and other machines have meltdowns.

You can’t blame Mercury Retrograde for everything — the planets don’t control us, so don’t use this as an excuse to go ballistic on people. In fact, we all need to exercise a little extra control during this time. Speak (or write) clearly, listen (or read) carefully. Ask questions. Try not to sign contracts, start big projects (especially involving other people), or make big travel plans without leaving a lot of room in your schedule for snafus. Mercury Retrograde doesn’t usually create HUGE problems, but its energy does generate a lot of little inconveniences and puts people in a snit.

Aside from hiding in a cave, which honestly sounds pretty good to me at this point, how can you deal with Mercury Retrograde constructively? This isn’t a good time for talking, but it is a good time for action: finish projects. Clean your house and your mind of all that crap that you’re sick of dusting. Get lost in memories and dig up some old wisdom you might need to re-learn. Be patient with yourself and others.

If you know which house in your chart is ruled by Gemini, you can zoom in on which area of your life is likely to be most affected by this, and how you can best turn it to your benefit. As it happens, I’m running a special offer to address this very problem! (Imagine!)

Cold Reading: The Bear

So I was outside smoking a smoke just now, at 3 in the morning. I looked down into my wine goblet and I saw a bear — angry, teeth bared (bear baring!), in the middle of a cityscape. So angry and lost and confused.

8This is a job for the Somniscript. I drew glyph #8, “MASTERY.”
This seems like a paradox at first: how can this bear be “in its element?” Especially when it’s so threatened by, and resistant to, its surroundings?

Ok, Person Who Needs This Reading, whoever you are: you have GOT to just accept the new situation. Accept it, consider it, learn to understand it, and then MAKE IT YOUR OWN. You can keep beating your head against this as long as you like, but it’s not going away. You can’t fight this change. You can, though, adapt — and eventually dominate. They might be able to change everything around you, but they can’t steal your teeth.
